    § 01 · The problem

    Filters that choke.

    Every filter costs pressure, and every fan has a budget for it. The trouble with pleated media on a dusty intake is not its initial resistance — it is how quickly that resistance climbs. Paper loads on its face, so the open area shrinks as dirt accumulates, and the pressure drop rises steeply through the service interval. By the end of it the fan is working considerably harder than it was designed to, moving less air than the system needs.

    Reticulated foam behaves differently on both counts. Its initial resistance is low, because the reticulated lattice is largely void space. More usefully, it captures through its depth rather than on its face, so it holds a great deal of dirt before restriction becomes noticeable — the resistance curve stays much flatter for much longer.

    § 02 · Specification

    Which grade.

    For air handling, the useful range is narrower than the range we supply:

    Thickness is the other half of the specification and it is often under-used. A thicker section at the same grade holds proportionally more dirt without increasing initial resistance much at all — frequently a better answer than going finer.     § 03 · Where it goes

    Units we supply.

    • Air handling units — flat panel elements cut to the frame, as a pre-filter or single stage.
    • Condenser and outdoor units — wraps and panels stopping leaves, fluff and insects off the coil.
    • Evaporative coolers — replacement pads cut to the housing, washable rather than replaced each season.
    • Ducted returns and grilles — cut to the grille aperture, hidden behind the fascia.
    • Compressors and blowers — intake guards on plant that draws directly from a dusty space.
    • Electronics and control cabinets — vent filters keeping particulate off boards while ventilation continues.
    § 04 · Fitting

    Cut to the unit.

    Foam is supplied die-cut to the housing rather than as sheet for somebody to trim on site, because a hand-trimmed filter leaks around its edges and the bypass undoes the filtration. Send the frame dimensions, or the existing element, or a drawing — see die-cutting to your drawing.

    Where a unit's element sits in a frame, tell us and we can cut for a light interference fit so the foam holds itself in place. And because these are washable elements, it is worth ordering two sets: one in the machine and one clean and dry on the shelf, so a service never means waiting for a filter to dry.

    Common questions.

    Which foam grade suits an HVAC intake?

    Between 30 and 45 PPI for a filtering intake, and 20 to 30 PPI where the foam is a pre-filter protecting a finer stage downstream. The coarser the foam, the less it loads the fan and the longer it runs between washes — so specify the coarsest grade that catches what you actually need to stop.

    Will a foam filter reduce my airflow?

    Every filter costs some pressure, but reticulated foam costs less than most because the reticulated lattice is largely void. Its bigger advantage is over time: pleated paper loads on its face and chokes progressively, while foam captures through its depth and keeps flowing much longer at close to its initial resistance.

    Can foam replace the filter in an existing air handling unit?

    Usually, if the housing takes a flat element and you are not obliged to hold a certified filtration rating. Send the existing filter or the frame dimensions and we cut foam to the same profile and thickness. Where the specification demands a rated grade for compliance, foam belongs in front of that stage as a pre-filter rather than in place of it.

    How often does an HVAC foam filter need washing?

    It depends entirely on the air, so watch the filter rather than the calendar. In a clean indoor plant room, quarterly is common; on a dusty industrial intake or during construction nearby, weekly is not unusual. A coarser grade and a thicker section both extend the interval.

    Do you supply foam for evaporative coolers and condenser guards?

    Yes. Both want the same thing an intake wants — open structure, minimal restriction, washable service — and both are ordered as die-cut sheets or wraps to the unit's dimensions. Send the profile or the old pad and we will match it.
