    § 01 · The difference

    Housing fits product, not the reverse.

    Buying a stock enclosure means designing your product around somebody else's box: the connectors go where a drilled panel allows, the board is packed out to reach mounting posts that are in the wrong place, and the finished thing looks like what it is.

    The alternative is not exotic. Every connector aperture, mounting hole, vent and standoff goes where your board actually needs it — and because printing carries no tooling cost, this is available from a single unit rather than from a hundred. That is the main practical difference between us and a company selling standard boxes: they need you to buy a hundred, and we do not.

    § 02 · Process

    Printed or moulded.

    Quantity decides, and since we do both, the advice is not steering you toward the only machine we own.

    Many products sensibly do both in sequence: printed while the design settles and for the first customers, moulded once volume justifies the tool. See low volume production and printed enclosures.

    § 03 · Features

    Designed in, not drilled after.

    • Connector and cable apertures — to your board's actual connector positions, with gland provision where the entry must seal.
    • Integrated standoffs and board supports — so the board is located by the housing rather than shimmed into it.
    • Ventilation and louvres — sized for the thermal load, with a foam vent filter behind them if the environment is dusty.
    • Mounting — wall, panel, DIN rail or chassis, as part of the moulding rather than an added bracket.
    • Light pipes and display recesses — LEDs visible where they should be, displays sitting flush.
    • Label and legend recesses — so a label sits in a pocket and does not peel at the edges.
    • Sealing — a gasket lip designed for the gasket, and the gasket cut to the same drawing. See IP65 enclosures.

    Designed in, these cost nothing extra. Added to a stock box afterwards, they look exactly like what they are.

    § 04 · Getting started

    What to send.

    A STEP export from your PCB tool carries everything at once and is by far the fastest route. Failing that, a dimensioned drawing or the physical board.

    • Board outline with mounting hole positions.
    • Tallest component heights and where they sit, so internal clearance is right.
    • Connector, LED, switch and display positions relative to the board edge.
    • Environment — indoor, outdoor, dusty, washed down. This drives material and sealing.
    • Quantity — now and expected annually, so the process advice is honest.

    § 05 · Questions

    Common questions.

    Can you make an enclosure for one prototype board?

    Yes. A single printed enclosure is normal work and there is no minimum, which is the main difference between us and a company selling stock boxes — they need you to buy a hundred, and we do not. Send the board outline and connector positions and you get a housing built around that board rather than a box you have to make your board fit.

    What do you need to design an enclosure around my board?

    The board outline with mounting hole positions, the height and position of the tallest components, and where the connectors, LEDs, switches and any display sit relative to the board edge. A STEP export from your PCB tool carries all of that at once and is by far the fastest route. Failing that, a dimensioned drawing or the physical board works.

    Printed or moulded — which should I choose?

    Quantity decides it. Printing has no tooling cost, so it wins from one unit up to a few hundred and lets you change the design between batches. Moulding costs a tool up front and then makes parts cheaply and with a better finish, so it wins as volume grows. Many products sensibly do both: printed while the design settles and for the first customers, moulded once the volume justifies the tool. We do both, so the advice is not steering you toward the only thing we own.

    Can you add ventilation, standoffs and cable glands?

    Yes — vents and louvres, integrated standoffs and board supports, DIN rail or wall mounting features, gland and connector apertures, light pipes for LEDs, and recesses for labels. Designed in from the start these cost nothing extra; drilled into a stock box afterwards they look exactly like what they are.

    Do you also supply the gasket and any foam inside the enclosure?

    Yes, and it is worth asking for together. We die-cut foam gaskets, vent filters and damping pads in-house, cut to the same drawing set as the enclosure, which removes the usual fitting problems that come from sourcing a housing and its seal from two different suppliers.
